The present volume is the first part of the KIKPE Numismatic Collection in the series of the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum. The Numismatic Collection of the Welfare Foundation for Social and Cultural Affairs (KIKPE), Athens, has in its acquisitions more than 4.000 coins of all periods; these were purchased abroad (Europe and the USA) through auction houses, mail bid sales, fixed price lists, etc. The collection is currently on loan to the Benaki Museum, Athens. Principal feature of this collection is the almost exclusive presence of bronze/copper coins, partly in an attempt to promote the role and the importance of bronze coinage as a medium facilitating everyday dealings. The 1,233 ancient Hellenic and Hellenized coins published here represent a geographical area extending from Hispania to Bactria and India, and from the Taurike Chersonesos to Mauretania. The terminus ante quem for the volume at hand is the years 27-25 BC; it was decided that the era of Augustus should be the lower chronological limit and that the coins in the KIKPE Collection after this date will be showcased in a second SNG volume covering the Roman Provincial issues and the contemporary kingdoms.
